OK, I'm from Wyoming. You know, where you can drive 15 minutes anywhere outside of any given town and be in the middle of nowhere with no one around.

I want something like that (at least close to it) in the Western Slope, though I'm open to any suggestions that are within reasonable distance from Denver. This will probably be a 2 day camping trip, with the possibility of some biking in the area.

Let's hear about the good camping in the area!

Western Slope and "reasonable distance to Denver" aren't necessarily compatible, but West Elk and the Flat Tops are not too far and great hiking/camping destinations. Both are designated Wilderness Areas as I recall, which means no mountain biking. West Elk is a better choice for solitude - relatively low density of backpackers. The Flat Tops is one of the best areas for lake fishing in the state, if you are in to that. The Maroon Bells have incredible mountain scenery, but tend to get a fair amount of summer use due to proximity to Aspen.

Oh, and if you don't have them you should get John Fielder's hiking guides:

Backpacker porn.
