My main advice would be to avoid locations with 14'ers unless you want to climb a 14'er. 14'ers attract a lot of people, and sometimes people you wouldn't want to be around. Neversummer wilderness west of Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park is fairly close to the Front Range and is perfect for a several-day trip. You also get there via Trail Ridge Road, which is incredible. The Flat Tops West of Yampa may be my favorite hiking spot in all of Colorado - a big, grassy plain on top of the world.
